Surrounded by New York University in the Greenwich Village, Washington Square Park is one of the most well-known parks in New York City.  Two of the city's most popular monuments are located in the park, the monument to George Washington and the Washington Square Arch.  Central to the park is a large fountain.  Built-in chess tables are continously occupied by avid players.  The park is inhabited by a variety of university and 'village' locals, artists, and street musicians who give the park its bohemian 'air'.
