May 24, 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge became the longest suspension bridge in the world and the first steel-wire suspension bridge.  No longer the longest, it is now one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States, stretching 6516 feet (1834 m) over the East River from Manhattan to Brooklyn.
