Alvin Ailey American Dance TheatreAlvin Ailey American Dance Theatre Average User Rating: (0 votes, add your vote or comments) Alvin Ailey and a group of young black modern dancers performed for the first time as members of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at New York’s 92nd Street YM-YWHA in 1958. Today, the company continues Mr. Ailey's mission by presenting important works of the past and commissioning new ones to add to the repertoire. In all, more than 170 works by over 65 choreographers have been performed by The Ailey. The new home for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre on the Northwest corner of 55th Street & 9th Avenue in New York City is scheduled to open in Fall of 2004. Redident groups will be Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, The Ailey School, Administrative offices for Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, including Ailey Arts-in-Education and Community Outreach.
